1. Systemic bigotry
First, the overall setting. The main characters are growing up in a starship bound for an uninhabited planet to colonize.
The ship is divided into two halves, one containing a ruling class of adult exiles, and the other half containing children (eventually adults, over the course of a twenty-year voyage) who were rejected as embryos for having undesirable genetic traits.
The future Earth society that launched this ship is highly oppressive, censorious, homophobic, ableist, and otherwise bigoted, and this very much carries into the way the ship is run.
The rules, enforced through constant surveillance, are mostly based on Fundamentalist Christian values consistent with the more extreme end of that range during our time.
