5. Harm to LGBTQ characters
There are chapters from the viewpoint of a homophobic antagonist in the ruling side of the ship. These include discussion of past atrocities he took part in, including the execution of a woman for seducing his wife, and the wife's suicide thereafter.
Among the main cast there is a lesbian woman, an asexual woman with same-sex romantic attraction, and a bisexual woman. They are involved in various conflicts and dangers throughout the story.
The non-straight characters explicitly deal with prejudice against their orientations as well as struggling with their own self-discovery, particularly that of the asexual character.
The narrator and most of the group support and respect their identities. However, there is an argument in which one character claims that asexuality can only be caused by sexual trauma, and others disagree strongly with him.
Of the main characters, all survive at the end except the bisexual woman, who is reported to have been killed offstage (in a murder largely motivated by prejudice against her orientation).
The lesbian and the asexual, at the story's end, are in a happy relationship with each other.
