5. LGBTQ characters
The same-sex female couple from the previous book remain together and happy. Despite turbulence in their relationship early on, they find a working solution to their problems and get another happy ending.
There are characters who modify their bodies to take various trans-humanist forms. These include the transgender leader of another planet colony. There is derogatory language toward such people from some of the antagonists.
The narrator's story alternates with diary entries from an intersex transgender character growing up in the ship's past, who faced the oppression and censorship of that time, and built a group of friends who shared secret thoughts in their own way.
The story in these diary entries involves struggles typical of teenage years, such as the character's loneliness and unrequited love. She also faces societal prejudice against her identity, as well as fearing for her life when building her secret resistance.
For the entire book, the fate of the diary writer is unknown. However, the ending suggests a hopeful hypothesis about where she is now, and sets up the next book to have her story as a continued plotline.
