6. Characters of color
There are references to systemic racism and classism in the previous regime on the ship, recounted to the narrator by a character who is suggested to be of mixed race and low social class.
The two Hispanic men from the previous book continue to be a major part of the ship's and the new colony's government. They continue their antagonistic dynamic with each other, including conflict over one of them becoming intimate with a dragon-like augmented transhumanist citizen of the high-tech planet colony.
While their conflict affects to the colony's stability, it also brings up past trauma, including a dangerous experience from their childhood.
However, they both survive the story unharmed, and so do all other characters who are described as people of color.
