9. Harm to animals
There are mentions of hunters who kill wild animals for sport.
There are brief mentions of other animals (standard livestock such as chickens and cattle) being used in standard livestock ways.
There are also combat scenes involving warriors who fight by sending trained attack animals after each other. This includes many instances of the protagonists killing and injuring animals (birds, rats, insects, snakes, and a mountain lion) in self-defense.
One of the birds, a small parrot, ends up leaving his master and being adopted by the narrator. He spends much of the book in danger of one kind or another, including being electrically stunned unconscious, lost in a city, threatened with euthanasia, medically sedated, tied up, and nearly drowned.
He does not die.
Neither does the dog.
