Loving and Precarious: A Short Story Collection
("The one with all the messed-up interpersonal drama.")
Aliens destroy childhood nostalgia. A boy on a starship loses touch with reality. Two lovers learn to fly, and a jewelry box learns to communicate.
This is the second volume in a three-book series adapted from my original short story collection, If the World Ended, Would I Notice? and Other Stories. That old book was published in 2013. I remember I wanted to get it out in 2012, on that year's wave of apocalyptic speculation, but I wasn't quite fast enough.
The original book was a widely varied mixture. All its stories have some element of the strange and outlandish. Science fiction mingles with fantasy. Some stories blur the lines between the two, and their borders with realism.
The title came from one of the stories in the original version. I wrote it during a time when I lived very much in my own little world, so much that I might have failed to notice right away if the world had actually ended.
Short stories aren't my main contribution to the literary world. My first published book, in 2003, was a memoir about my childhood. The second was a collection of strips from my webcomic, and the third was a science fiction novel.
I have come to realize, though, that I'd like more people to find my work through my short stories.
So I'm republishing If the World Ended, Would I Notice? and Other Stories as three books: Lonely and Precocious, Loving and Precarious, and Logical and Preposterous.
The origins of these vignettes are as varied as their nature. Some are polished from drafts I wrote long ago. A few overlap with my other works. But I have made a gentle effort to separate these genre-diverse works into three thematically distinct volumes.
This one, Loving and Precarious, moves outside the solitary worlds of the lonely and precocious protagonists of the first book. It explores what happens when such unique and isolated entities have to face tumultuous relationships with others in their world.
Whether those bonds are between family, friends or romantic partners, they form complicated, sometimes comic or tragic dramas against the backdrops of the stories' otherworldly universes.
For this book I have written one entirely new story, Old Age and Bad Memories. I've also added more illustrations, so each story now has a picture hand-drawn by me.
The first volume, which you may or may not have read already, is called Lonely and Precocious. Please take a look, if you're interested, and then maybe check out Logical and Preposterous, the final volume.
Welcome to my world.
