Finally: The Apartments

Section Break

Near the center of the room is the Apartment Building.

Section Break

Drawing of U-shaped, 5-story miniature apartment building made of shelves. Roof is covered with grass-like carpet and mountain-like planters with small houseplants. Two boxes over sections of the drawing connect to enlarged close-ups of those sections, one seen from outside and one from inside.

This may be built from a single shelving unit, or may consist of several.

Each shelf is at least 30" wide, 50" tall and 20" deep, supporting 5 stories of miniature apartments.

The apartments are little ten-inch cubes, with a walkway along each side.

Section Break

Close-up drawing of a few shelves of the apartments. They are open like dollhouses, with a walkway and guardrail alongside them, and a cylindrical elevator hanging on a cord at the end of the shelf. Most are strange and alien, such as an aquarium-like room containing a four-limbed aquatic creature, a room with mouse-like creatures playing a board game while their cat sits in the foreground, and a room with a two-headed vendor behind a counter overlooking the walkway. One cube is divided into two floors and populated with extra-tiny insect-like people. One has curtains partially hiding a tentacled creature that sits at a table inside. In one, a large bug-like resident relaxes in a hammock.

(The shelves can have strings of lights along them, powered by battery packs.)

On the ends are elevators, which visitors may operate by pulling a string.

Above each apartment is a small sign with the apartment number and an artist-written description of what is inside, along with some details of the world-building behind it.

Some alien creatures ("Wanderers") are on the walkways instead of inside their apartments. Their position and location can change from day to day.

At first, viewers see the mostly-closed-off outer side, peering in through the windows.

Section Break

A further enlarged close-up of a section of the miniature apartment building seen from outside. In this image, two women are walking hand-in-hand past the outer walls of the apartments, smiling and pointing at them. The women are slightly shorter than the apartment building, illustrating its scale.

Section Break

As they walk around it, they can see that the other side is open like a dollhouse.

The shelves are wrapped in clear marine vinyl for protection.

(This is what the Stopwatch Time Machine means by the "transparent film of the time-pausing effect.")

Section Break

A further enlarged close-up of a section of the miniature apartment building seen from inside. In this image, the two women are walking hand-in-hand around the shelf to see the open inner side of the apartments, still admiring them. Facial expressions and hand positions have changed slightly, indicating greater surprise. The women's height still illustrates the scale of the exhibit, showing that the building is slightly taller than they are.
