The Baking Cooperative

Section Break

The Baking Cooperative is a shared home and workplace for eight different chefs, all belonging to species of extra-short stature. Their tiny size permitted them to divide a standard cube into two floors, with the bedrooms and bathrooms upstairs and the kitchen downstairs.

Plumbing provided a bit of a challenge, since there was enough variation among the species to require three different types of toilets. But they found bathtub and bed designs that worked for all of them... and their sleep differences actually helped with scheduling.

The complementary sleeping cycles of the various species enable them to work and rest in shifts, so they need only four beds and can keep the shop open all day and night.

On the whole, they get along well as both roommates and coworkers, and can cooperate to make pastries big enough for people many times their size.

Drawing of a 2-story cube. Bottom floor: a kitchen with stove, oven, several shelves of foods and baked goods, transparent wall and door opening onto the other side. One tiny dinosaur-like creature is stirring a bowl of dough nearly as large as herself, while a tiny octopus hands her an egg. One small humanoid with antennae tends a pan on the stove; another removes a pan from the oven. Behind him, a door opens into a neighboring cube. In middle of room, one more dinosaur is ascending the stairs. A guard rail lines the edge of the second floor. Left side of second floor: three differing toilets in stalls, one fairly normal, one cylinder-shaped and one resembling a litter box. Above them, an octopus bathes in a seashell-shaped tub on a loft reached by a ladder. On the other side, a shelf with 8 storage compartments, and 4 small nooks containing furniture and tube-shaped sleeping bunks. A dinosaur sits at a desk in one of these, while a humanoid naps in a bed.

Photo of the Baking Cooperative mockup cube, removed from the shelving, seen from the closed outer side. Wall is made of transparent windows. Shelf of pastries can be seen through windows on first floor, beside an open door where a small green humanoid is visible. The roof and sides of the cube are wrapped in a golden, patterned fabric, sewn to a black rope that frames the perimeter of the windowed side.

View of the Baking Cooperative mockup cube, removed from the shelving, seen from the side. Outer wall is clad in a golden, patterned fabric, with one open doorway hemmed with hand-sewn brown embroidery floss. This is the side door that leads into Operator 16's cube.

Close-up of the upstairs bathroom in the Baking Cooperative mockup cube, showing that the semi-humanoid toilet in this version is made of decorative ring-shaped beads, while the cylindrical one is a tiny glass bottle, and the litter box is made from an oblong foil blister from a pack of large pills, cut out and filled with desiccant granules.

Close-up of the upstairs bedroom in the Baking Cooperative mockup cube, showing that the sleeping tubes in this version are made of yellow hair rollers lined with tiny pads of yoga-mat foam. A dinosaur, wearing a yellow rubber dress from a doll, sleeps in one of them, while a lobster in a similar pink dress climbs a ladder from the floor below.

Another close-up of the upstairs bathroom in the Baking Cooperative mockup cube, this time focusing on the bathtub. In this version it is on the floor in front of the stalls, and it's made of a scallop shell on a ring of black beads. The shower stream from the nozzle above is made of thin strips of clear plastic, and a tiny octopus rests beneath the spray.

View of the display shelf of pastries against the window of the Baking Cooperative mockup cube. Top shelf is a muffin tin, made of a pill blister-pack, filled with clay muffins topped with blue beads. Second shelf is a tray of flat cookies covered in desiccant sprinkles; bottom shelf is an open-topped clay pie in a metal bottle cap, filled with red beads. More pies, cookies, and muffins are visible on another shelf in foreground, as well as a layer cake in a plastic bottle cap.

View of a tiny green humanoid, made from a green toy soldier with gold clothing painted on. He is stirring a giant bowl of dough, in front of a counter under a shelf of tiny jars made of desiccant canisters and flour sacks made of desiccant packets. In the foreground, a four-legged dinosaur, wearing a blue rubber doll dress, brings him a pill-blister carton of translucent yellow vitamin-capsule eggs. In the background, an octopus rolls out dough on the counter with a rolling pin made of a tube-bead.

A view of the left side of the Baking Cooperative mockup cube, showing the hind end of the dinosaur carrying the egg carton, as well as the nearest shelf of pies, bead-topped muffins, cookies, and layer cake. Above them, part of the upper floor can be seen, with the ladder-climbing lobster, and the dinosaur going to bed in the yellow sleeping tube.
